Asolo Military Boots - Long story short, when I got home on R&R after being away for nine months, I was looking for some new Asolo boots. My search led me to one of the great outdoor stores that carries a wide variety of Asolo boots.
After careful consideration, I chose the $200 Asolo Fugitive GTX mid-top boots. After the Converse I switched to my Merrell Chameleons uppers which are very comfortable to wear and light. After 3 months of torture on the mountain, the toe cap on both shoes started to curl and get stuck on the rocks during movement and kicking dirt.

I then tried a pair of low top North Face sneakers and they stayed put and worked great. My only criticism is that the low top doesn't provide enough ankle support and protection. Crossing water hazards wasn't a problem and my feet stayed dry thanks to the Gore-Tex socks and Fox River that went with the boots.
The Fox socks also help with developing hot spots and I haven't had any issues with them. The only problem I have with the Asolo boots is the laces. Overall, I love these boots. Pair now I have a second pair.
The first one served me for over 2 years before the soles were too thin for me to wear properly. Asolo hiking boots and shoes may have Italian heritage, but we found them suitable for hiking in Australian conditions.

Asolo makes popular full leather models as well as lightweight and easy to wear composite boots. Although light, these models have a proper insole that makes them great for walking. Asolo footwear is designed around the foot;
flexible, light and at the same time strong. Fit and performance are Asolo's biggest strengths. A breathable Goretex layer is used for waterproofing and the midsoles can absorb shock even on the toughest terrain. The highly researched sole prevents slips and falls on even the smoothest surfaces.
One of the things that comes in handy when wearing these boots (and all boots) is to use professional insoles. I use blue or orange Superfeet depending on how much weight I will be carrying. It's a must-have because the insoles that come with Asolo boots are thin and lack support.
Returning to Afghanistan with the new Asolos on my feet was a good choice, although it took some time to get used to my stiff soles. I have now been wearing the Asolo for 6 months and I am more than happy with the durability, comfort and fit.

Stiff soles are there for a reason and don't matter much when 60+ lbs of gear is packed. The sole provides stiff, springy arch support for every step. Having spent autumn, winter and early spring in the mountains of Afghanistan and late spring, summer, autumn and now winter in the desert of Afghanistan, I have seen many of the climates that Afghanistan has to offer and have experienced first hand what
good and bad footwear. it can affect your feet. After hanging out with the Army Civil Affairs guys and various Spec-Ops members I noticed that about 30% of them were wearing Asolo boots; I asked more about them and got some good advice from users and decided to check them out next time I was in the US.
In the meantime, I did some research and discovered that Asolo is an Italian company founded in 1975 and focused on providing good outdoor footwear for light hiking in the most dangerous areas. The boots are tough, keeping your feet dry and comfortable even when carrying heavy loads.
The boots are made of water-resistant split-grain leather and a Cordura upper with a Gore-Tex lining. Combined weight is about 3 lbs. Not too heavy, not too light. Since the boot uses fast laces, the metal has a tendency to wear down and wear the laces, causing them to break.

If you're on duty, bring an extra set or two of laces just in case. I highly recommend the Asolo Fugitive GTX boots and hope to have them in my "feet arsenal" for the next year I spend in Afghanistan.

The sole unit will break down when your footwear is used only occasionally and stored for long periods of time. The sole unit breaks down faster than if the footwear is used regularly. Hydrolysis is a normal material aging process that occurs in all footwear with PU midsole cushioning regardless of manufacturer.
The process is also present in cars, tires, ski boots or helmets and does not show lower quality or even quality problems in materials or workmanship. I first ventured into the mountains in late spring with a pair of 8 "Converse" boots;
while this proved to be comfortable, they were warm and bulky during high-temperature days and spongy during the temperamental thaws/freezes cycle. Afghan winter and left me screaming to dry. When the PU midsole starts to wear down, you will notice a small crack in the injection area, above the sole unit.
This is an indication that your boots are worn out. If you experience a single unit. separation, or damage, email us. Our customer service team will contact you regarding the age of the boots and what steps can be taken regarding the sole separation.
The only thing I notice is how well it performs in semi-freezing conditions. Usually this breathable boot provides almost no insulation in cold conditions. However, escapes are great in the late fall / early winter snow in the mountains. I would not recommend d too full for winter activities, but good for colder temperatures.
Asolo USA does not offer outsole units for sale, nor does it offer its own repair service. Any authorized Vibram shoemaker will be able to replace the outsole with an identical or suitable replacement outsole.
